Masterson was born on Long Island, New York, the son of Carol (his manager) and Peter Masterson, a State Farm Insurance agent.[2] The two divorced in 1984.[3] He has a younger brother, Christopher Masterson, who portrayed the unruly Francis on Malcolm in the Middle and the recurring character of Todd on That '70s Show. His other younger siblings are his younger paternal half-brother, Will Masterson (who attends the University of Southern California), a younger maternal half-brother Jordan Reaiche (pronounced Reesh), and a younger maternal half-sister named Alanna Reaiche (who is also an actress, appearing in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle and on Y&R as Colleen Cecile Carlton from 1994–1995). Jordan and Alanna's dad Joe Reaiche (who was a famous professional Rugby League player in Sydney Australia) raised Danny and his brother Chris as well. The families have grown up in professional environments and despite remarriages are still close.
Masterson was raised as a member of the Church of Scientology. He once said, "I have been acting since age 4. I have always been working and I have always been in Scientology my entire life. Each service in Scientology is something I have added to my toolbox of data for living."[4] In December 2005, he helped promote the gala opening of Scientology's controversial "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death" museum.[5]
Danny was engaged to model/actress Chrissie Carnell for six years and the pair lived together until 2003. He was quoted in InStyle magazine as calling Carnell, "the love of my life." He has been dating socialite and fellow Scientologist Bijou Phillips since 2004.
With his brother Chris and That '70s Show co-star Laura Prepon, Danny invested in Card Player magazine. He currently resides in Los Angeles and New York.
