ISO 3166-2:AR is an ISO standard which defines geocodes: it is the subset of ISO 3166-2 which applies to Argentina. It describes 1 federal district (AR-C) and 23 provinces. The first part is the ISO 3166-1 code AR for Argentina, the second part of the code is one-digit-alphabetic. The letters have their origin in the Argentine license plates system. This explains why letters I and O are skipped. Since these could be mistaken for a 1 or 0, they were left out of license plates.
