The 47 Ronin (元禄忠臣蔵 Genroku chushingura?) was a two-part film produced in 1941, the first part originally released in Japan just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, and adapted from the play by Seika Mayama, the film chronicles the end of the lives of the Forty-seven Ronin, which has become a (historically based) legend in Japanese history. The film was released initially in Japan in 1941, and not until much later (1960s - 1970s) in the west.
